Asphalt Operator – Petone/Ngauranga - $30-34 pending experience

Responsibilities: 

  • Surface Preparation: Cleaning and sweeping bases, applying "tack coat" (hot or cold-mix asphalt) to bond new layers, and setting up site levels.
  • Asphalt Application: Hand-laying asphalt in tight areas using shovels and rakes, or assisting with paver-laid operations for larger surfaces.
  • Compaction & Finishing: Using plate compactors or small rollers to ensure a smooth, durable finish and managing joints to minimize visible seams.
  • Machine Operation: Operating specialized equipment such as pavers, rollers, and bobcats (requires specific endorsements). 

Typical Requirements: 

  • Licensing: At minimum, a Class 1 Full licence is required. Many employers prefer Class 2 or 4 for driving tippers and WTR (Wheels, Tracks, Rollers) endorsements for machinery.
  • Health & Safety: Must have a Site Safe or Construct Safe card and pass pre-employment drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Physicality: High level of fitness is required for manual raking and working in high temperatures near hot asphalt.

  • Clean MOJ or no convictions
  • Reliable transport
  • 1-2 year’s experience
